Is this really that impressive a feat? For a seven year-old, I would assume so, but is the only thing notable about this the fact that he was 7 years old?
Are there seperate records for swimming from Alcatraz to San Fran for each age? I mean, what is the distinction here, that he beat the other kid's record for being the youngest to complete the swim or the fastest/youngest? If a 10-year old beat his time, would he not get credit because he's 3 years older?
And doesn't doing such strenuous exercise at such a young age carry health risks? Couldn't this possibly delay puberty for a child? The only reason I bring this up is that I read on the Wikipedia page for delayed puberty:

This is an impressive a feat. The earliest "youngest swimmer" was 9. He held the record for about six months.
Records are kept only casually for the Alcatraz swim. Though times are kept for individual swims, they are always considered "relative" because of the dynamic nature of the bay. I have a friend who took almost 2 hours to make the swim one time, and another time took a half hour. It depends upon such conditions as the strength of the currents, wind, and choppiness of the water at that particular day and time.
I have mixed feelings about such a hard physical feat at such a young age as seven. The parents of a 5 year old are now saying they're going to have their son beat Bilbrey's record. In fact, they have called on Bilbrey's parents to run the two boys in a race.
