[edit] Historical and demographic ties
Brazil, during the Transatlantic Slave Trade, was the single largest importer of slaves from the African continent; one of the major sources of slaves to Brazil and other European-American colonies was the coast and interior of what is now known as Nigeria. As a result of the mass importation of slaves from this area, a major portion of the Afro-Brazilian population is of Nigerian (especially Yoruba) ancestry.
