Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Interlochen center for the arts.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:Interlochen center for the arts.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 18:11, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Conflict of interest

[ welcome/coi/auto templates left ]

Hey. Actually if you check, you'll notice that I (Scott Kirknes) did not create the Scotty Kirkness page. I corrected it, but I did not start it. As I have been given a medal of honour by the Queens representative in Canada for my bravery. I believe that qualifies. —Preceding unsigned comment added by S kirkness (talkcontribs) 17:14, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
Good point. I wanted to give you a heads-up about a potential issue, and I used standard templates that may not have been 100% applicable to your specific case. Sorry for any confusion. The Scotty Kirkness page has had a curious history, but in its current sense it was established by anonymous user User:170.65.128.6. For obvious reasons, I suspected that that might be you editing before you created an account, but I'm happy to assume good faith. Either way, the WP:COI and WP:AUTO pages are still relevant, as I'm sure you've already discovered. I agree that the medal of honour is likely sufficient to establish notability (although it is is sufficiently borderline that other editors may disagree). Bovlb (talk) 20:05, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

Huh!

I never actually knew that; glad to learn something new (re: electrocution @ the ref desk). Lanfear's Bane | t 10:29, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

But Wikipedia is non-comercial use (I hope)

What's the deal with photos of living people? If I find a photo on Flickr.com that the photographer has released under CC and it is of a really famous person can I upload it to wikipedia?Sometimes somethings (talk) 04:07, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

I think it depends exactly which flavour of CC. Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#For image creators suggests some acceptable variants, with the key being that "the license must not prevent commercial reuse or derivative works". You might want to post your question at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions if this wasn't helpful. Bovlb (talk) 04:34, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for your help. Must it really be on CC allowing commercial use? Sometimes somethings (talk) 04:44, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
One of our objectives in building Wikipedia is that others may make broad use of the content, so we have to allow for the possibility of commercial reuse. For example, suppose someone (perhaps the Wikimedia Foundation) wanted to sell "Wikipedia on a DVD", would that be commercial? Our copyright rules may seem overly paranoid and unnecessarily restrictive, but I'm afraid they are what they are, and there has been a lot of thought put into them. Bovlb (talk) 04:59, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
Our copyright rules may seem overly paranoid....there has been a lot of thought put into them.

I don't find them at all paranoid. They are rational and well reasoned; I would like to find a good resource for learning all of them without my head spinning off! I don't doubt there has been a lot of work put into them. I certainly appreciate that work and all the work that you and others do. In actuality, I'm very fussy about sticking to copyright law for anything that will be seen by others. I flagrantly ignore copyright law when it's for my own enjoyment—which I know is still illegal—but I don't care; there are lots of things I don't like about copyright law, and it's my bit of civil disobedience. That doesn't mean I'm not committed to maintaining legality elsewhere. (wikipedia and publications for work, for example) Sometimes somethings (talk) 05:13, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

I don't find our copyright rules to be as clearly-explained and well-organized as I would like, but you can find most things by following links from Wikipedia:Copyrights. Bovlb (talk) 05:21, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

Spam links

THanks for your help with the anon who was spamming northern ontario articles. The same editor has created an account under the name Declutterize and seems to be doing the same thing. Might be an account to put on watch. --Renrenren (talk) 01:40, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll keep my eye on it, but again he seems to have stopped for the moment after receiving a warning. Blocks are protective, not punitive. Bovlb (talk) 01:44, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

User:75.82.151.159's block

Hi, Bovlb. I blocked this user for 31 hours. When the block expired, he came out shooting. Would you mind if I extended to 72 hours. Cheers, Dlohcierekim 01:50, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

No objection. Bovlb (talk) 01:55, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. Done. Cool Userbox. Dlohcierekim 02:15, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
You're welcome. Thanks. Bovlb (talk) 06:36, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

New anti wheel war

No prob. Thanks for the heads up. Only issue I fond is the contrast between the dark background and the link's blue color makes them hard to read. -- Alexf42 12:50, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
