Do we have a cite for a family name "Borg" deriving from "cyborg"? Ventifax 19:51, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

The Borg from Star Wars are probably what most people looking up "Borg" will be trying to find, so I've moved some stuff around to reflect this. --Alexc3 ^(talk) 02:20, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

In newsgroup rec.woodworking and several Internet forums for woodworking hobbyist (i.e. www.sawmillcreek.org) the term BORG can be found as an acronym for Big Orange Retail Giant. This is a derogatory term for large retail home improvement stores. One large chain of retail home improvement stores uses the color orange for its corporate image. The term BORG is applied to all large retail home improvement stores in its usage on the above Internet locations. The Star Trek cross-reference to BORG is related to the demise of local hardware stores that supplied woodworking hobbyist due to what appeared to be mindless and ruthless business practices of the big retail home improvement stores. I added a note about Borg being a common Maltese family name. Here is a link about the name Borg: http://www.searchmalta.com/surnames/borg/index.shtml. I'm not aware of any famous Borgs though. The name is pronounced so that the "g" sounds like the g in "general", making it sound quite distinct from the Borg from Star Trek. 124.168.94.72 (talk) 16:39, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Microsoft as the Borg

Well, I deleted this reference thinking that it was not really encyclopedic, because I don't feel that it is really common knowledge that Microsoft is referred to as the Borg. Besides this fact, this is a disambiguation page and not a general list, only the things actually commonly called just "Borg" should appear here. No one would actually type 'Borg' into Wikipedia's search box expecting to get to Microsoft, right? Well someone reverted my edit. I don't want to start a revert war... but I am going to remove it because I really don't think that it belongs on a disambiguation page. Does anyone think that such an edit would fly on Microsoft's article? I would say "no." So why should it go here? P337 (talk) 07:12, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

It's a very, very common reference in the IT community. Look at the picture attached to every Slashdot article about Microsoft, for example. If I had to put it to a vote right now, I'd vote to leave it in, as long as it was made clear it was a "humorous reference" or something. Sloverlord (talk) 18:18, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

But this is a disambiguation page, which means it is supposed to be a list of things commonly called "Borg." If it think it is a common reference, then I'd put it in either the Microsoft article or the Borg article. It likely wouldn't fly in either articles though.
