[edit] Co-op Party

The Labour Party, affiliated organisations Question - If the Co-operative Party is an affiliated organisation & therefore a constituent part of the Labour Party, what are Bob's reasons for wanting to be a member of the Liberal Democrats AND a member of the Labour Party? Please cite one of his articles/opinions for reference. Thanks! Davidbober 01:28, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

The Co-op Party actually isn't affiliated to the Labour Party, but is often referred to as being so for laziness/ease. It is a separate political party, registered with the Electoral Commission, which has an electoral agreement (rather than an affiliation agreement) with the Labour Party. It has some of the same rights as socialist societies, plus some extra ones. It originally started separate to the Labour Partty although its elected representatives always took the Labour whip. The Co-op Party allows members of the Labour Party, or members of none to join.
Russell (and some in the Co-op Party) believe that Co-op interests would best be served by working in partnership with other parties too - Russell has written letters and articles in the Co-operative News on the subject but I haven't kept those. Perhaps someone can come up with a reference from an old copy. Mtiedemann 09:43, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

Would be great, thanks. Davidbober 00:15, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
