[edit] Early life

In high school, while competing for St. Xavier in Louisville, Kentucky, Curtis won individually, or was a member of teams that won 19 state titles. He was named an All-American in cross country his sophomore and senior seasons. In track & field, he was named an All-American in his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons.

[edit] College career

At Villanova, Curtis won the 2004 and 2007 Big East championships in cross country. He placed 15th in cross country nationals in 2004, and 4th in 2007. Both of these finishes earned All-American honors. In the spring of 2007, after suffering injuries and setbacks over the previous two seasons, Curtis returned to competition. That season, he ran a mile in 3:57.20, currently the second fastest American mile time of 2007. Curtis closed the season by winning the 5000-meter run in the NCAA East Regional and then placing second to Wisconsin's Chris Solinsky in this event in the NCAA Championships.

[edit] High School Career (1999-2003)

  • 1999-2000: In the pre-season to the freshman cross country season, Curtis won each of St. Xavier's time trials, beating more experienced teammates Tyler Cross and Matt Graham (both of whom went on to run for Xavier University). St. Xavier head coach Chuck Medley started Curtis running in junior varsity races, all of which he won by wide margins. In late September, Medley entered Curtis in his first varsity meet, the Franklin County Invitational at the Horse Park in Lexington, KY (site of the Kentucky cross country state meet). Curtis finished 15th overall, and sixth on the team.

Curtis finished second in the regional and third in the state meet, leading St. Xavier to its 14th cross country state championship. It was the first of 19 state championships Curtis would win at St. Xavier. In the spring track season, Curtis won his first individual state titles -- taking the 1600-meter run in 4:19.60 and the 3200-meter run in 9:41.92.

  • 2000-2001: Curtis won three individual state championships, and led St. Xavier to a team track and field state title. On the national level, he finished 10th at the Foot Locker Cross Country Nationals (the highest finish for a sophomore), and won the Nike Indoor Classic mile.
