From 13 September to 12 October, Muslims observe the holy month of Ramadan. During this month Muslims abstain from eating, drinking and sexual activities from sunrise to sunset, thus fulfilling one the five pillars of Islam.
The month of Ramadan is special because the revelations of the Qur'an began in this month. The exact date of the night of the first revelation is unspecified, but is said to be one of the odd nights of the last ten days (2 to 12 October, this year) of the month. Thus these nights are the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th of Ramadan. The significance of this night - called the "Night of Power" - is discussed in the Qur'an [1]
In the name of God, the Benevolent, the Merciful.
1 Lo! We revealed it on the Night of Power.
2 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Night of Power is!
3 The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.
4 The angels and the Spirit descend therein, by the permission of their Lord, with all decrees.
5 Peace until the rising of the dawn.
Thus during the odd nights amongst the last ten nights of Ramadan, Muslims perform prayers (especially the Tarawih), meditation, recitation of the Qur'an and reflection of its verses.
