[edit] Origins

AFI have increasingly included synthesized elements into their recent albums; 2003 release Sing the Sorrow and 2006 release Decemberunderground credit Puget with 'programming and keyboards'.[1][2] These synthesized elements are particularly apparent on songs such as "Death of Seasons" and "37mm". In the August 2006 edition of Guitar World, Puget states that AFI songs "37mm" and "Love Like Winter" were both originally intended as part of the Blaqk Audio side-project.[3] Elements of programming, however, can be found as early as 2000's The Art of Drowning, which featured a drum machine on "The Despair Factor".

Havok has stated that he believes the Blaqk Audio concept began at some point between 2001 and 2002. [4]. The project went on hiatus for an extended period, before being revived in 2006.[5] Puget worked on the development of Blaqk Audio in his spare time during AFI's tour schedule, writing songs before sending them to Havok to write melodies and lyrics. As Puget has explained, they experimented with a multitude of sounds, from industrial to ambient, and were influenced by a wide variety of electronic music.[6]

In January of 2007, Havok and Puget entered the studio to record several songs that formed CexCells, their first album.[7] Puget kept fans apprised with updates through his blog, before the Blaqk Audio MySpace was created in February of 2007 (he announced on 27th July that they had finished filming the video for their debut single 'Stiff Kittens', which has yet to be seen). Since then, both members of Blaqk Audio have posted several updates on their MySpace blog.[8]

[edit] Genre

Blaqk Audio incorporates various genres of electronic music into their own style, that currently or not, has been described as Electropop, Synth Pop [9], Futurepop, Techno[10], EBM[11], Industrial [12], and Darkwave[13] orientated project because of the dark and gloomy feeling in their music[14].

[edit] Currently

On November 14, Puget stated in another MySpace blog that he has about 40 more Blaqk Audio songs in various stages of completion.[15]

On Saturday, January 12, 2008, Puget stated in a Myspace blog post that he had uploaded a new song to the Blaqk Audio Myspace entitled "The Ligature".

"I posted a new piece I did called the Ligature. I took a loop of Davey's vocals, chopped and processed them, and then created a kind of breakbeat track with it. An example of me nerding out with my computer. Enjoy!
Jade"

Two instrumental versions of the Blaqk Audio songs, "Between Breaths" and "The Love Letter" were used in trailers, and on the official website for the 2008 film, "The Eye". In response to the buzz it created, in a blog, Puget suggested at a possible release of all the CexCells songs in instrumental form.

On February 1st, 2008 Blaqk Audio released another blog stating:

"Blaqk Audio is playing Bamboozle on April 6th. !."

While members Davey Havok and Jade Puget have been writing AFI's upcoming eigth album, Jade admitted to also writing more music for Blaqk Audio.

In 2008 "Mute" appeared on the EBM/Industrial compilation "Industrial attack vol.1" and "Snuff on digital" appeared on "Industrial attack vol.2"
