The Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois was established in 1931 when Louis 'Boots' Markwell purchased the former Laugel home, which was built in 1894 by Mr. Laugel and named it Markwell Funeral Home. The home, until this time was occupied by Mr. Joseph Boos family.

Mr. Markwell owned and operated the Markwell Funeral Home from 1931 to 1941. Prior to the purchase of the Laugel home, Louis and his father George Markwell were established undertakers on the square in Newton. In 1941 the funeral home was sold to Dean Parker who owned and operated the Parker Funeral Home until the 1950s when the funeral home was sold to James Flagg, and his wife Patricia. It then became the Flagg Funeral Home, which was operated by the Flagg family until 1969 when James Buchanan purchased the business. In that same year Darrell and Ruth Holland moved to Newton and became the managers of Buchanan Funeral Home and managed the funeral home until their retirement in 1985.

In 1987 Ron and Ann Blake, the owners of Bishop Funeral Home in Greenup, and Dominic and Debra Stasi purchased the funeral home. Dominic Stasi sold his share of the funeral home to the Blake's, who have owned it ever since. In 1994 Jason Meyer joined the staff of the funeral home and in 1999 became the manager and resides above the funeral home.

Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home has been recognized as a leader in Newton and Jasper County in providing excellent services to the families served. Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home can provide both traditional ceremonies along with limited ceremonies tailored to the needs and desires of each family served.

Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home has the staff of three people, Jason Meyer, the licensed funeral director and embalmer, and Doug Long, and George Roth. The prep room is located directly behind the front of the chapel, while it has a spacious family lounge area. Off of the lounge area is a sliding panel door, and behind that sits the casket selection room. The office is through the front door, down the hall, through the second door, and back left. Renovations have been seen throughout Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home. New light fixtures, new paint, and a newly renovated family section are just some of the newly renovated items. The detached two-car garage holds the hearse and the funeral home Chevy Suburban, used for various tasks such as pick-ups and transporting flower arrangements.
