[edit] Appeals to fellow Wikipedians
- Content must always come before Form!
- Don't reject these ideas, just because I won't write "please consider this" in front of every line. Firstly think about what I'm trying to say, and whether it makes any sense to you.
- Don't revert an edit solely on the grounds that it's not up to a certain standard – be thankful for every contribution of information and improve the style yourself if it bothers you.
- Information quality does matter!
- Unambiguous and precise wording is an art. :-) When I find a sentence that takes me too long to comprehend or that could be misunderstood I'll edit it into something more to the point.
- Don't use JPEG for four-colour line-art-graphics!
- When an article is about a unique photograph, and an image of the photograph is shown, you have to mention if the image is a cropped or flipped representation of the photograph.
- Link as much as you can!
- Even common everyday words can create interesting or valuable side-paths, – for casual reading as well as for serious research.
- Personally I would not mind a Wikipedia with every single word blue, but I guess some will disagree here, so I try to keep myself in check when editing.
- Still: I think the policy of turning a certain word into a link only once per article is wrong: It should be (at least! :-) ) once per major section. I hate it when I do a quick research about a certain aspect - say, the history - of someting, and I have to scroll back up and go hunting for explanations of unknown words.
- Always keep in mind that you're not writing for yourself, but for the rest of the world, who isn't as smart as you. :-)
- Well what I mean is: an encylopedia article must be readable for newbies to the subject of the article, who don't know as much about the subject as you do.
- Avoid unexplained jargon, or better yet: use it and explain it. Especially the english Wikipedia is read all over the world. See if you can't avoid idiomatic expressions, which might be tough for a non-native speaker. An encyclopedia should be a means for transporting information, not a playground for novelists. Don't ge me wrong, I don't mind personal style, I just want the priorities set correctly.
[edit] Howtos
(stuff I never remember when I need it)
- Redirect
- #REDIRECT [[WalkThisWay]]
- "Top link":
For the other use of the word, see This Article (here).
- is generated by entering:
- {{For|the other use of the word|This Article (here)}}
- "Above all, do not pipe the link. Show the entire linked article title as is."
- Wikisourcecodequoting
- <tt><nowiki> Put it Here </nowiki></tt>
- Now try and figure out the wikisource for that line without looking! :-)
