[edit] Summary

Description
English: CASTLE OF YEDO,—INNER MOAT. THE Castle of Yedo, for Two Hundred and Sixty years the residence of the Taikuns, and now (1869,) that of the Mikado of Japan, was built in the beginning of the seventeenth century, by Iyeyasu, the great founder of the last dynasty of Taikuns, or Shioguns. An older Castle had, however, previously existed on the spot where now stands the Nishi-no-Maru, or Western Palace. It was built, according to one account at least, by Ota-do-kan, a noted retainer of a former dynasty. The Hon-Maru, or principal palace, with the moats as they now exist, are the work of Iyeyasu. The Nishi-no-Maru is seen in the view at the farther end of the bridge, while the Hon-maru occupies the space behind the spot where the spectator is supposed to be standing.
