Hornitos, California is a small town in Mariposa County,California. A ghost town after the Gold Rush of 1849 it currently lays between a split in the road. Horntios in Spanish means small ovens. Hornitos can still be seen in the local graveyards. These little ovens were used by the local Mexicans to bury their dead. The hard, clay soil resulted in the rounded ovens or hornitos . Each fall during The Day of the Dead former residents relatives, and interested lookers come to the area cemetaries to once again be with the dead.
Hornitos was incorporated in 1870 and it most famous father is perhaps Mr. Domingo Ghiradelli. Ghirdelli opened a store here in 1858. A plaque on one of the store walls denotes this site.
