Bill Ritter (Born February 26, 1950) is an emmy award winning American television news anchor and journalist. He currently co-anchors the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. editions of Eyewitness News on WABC-TV in New York City with Liz Cho, in addition to being a reporter for the ABC News magazine program 20/20.
Ritter replaced longtime WABC anchor Bill Beutel on the 11 p.m. newscast in 1999, and on the 6 p.m. newscast in 2001 with Diana Williams. Prior to that, he was a weekend anchor from 1998 to 1999, after serving as a co-anchor on ABC's Good Morning America Sunday from 1993 to 1998. During his tenure on Good Morning America Sunday, he filled in for Charles Gibson on Good Morning America.
In July 2006, he returned to Good Morning America as a substitute co-anchor, while still anchoring the 6 p m. and 11 p.m. newscasts on WABC with Liz Cho, and was considered a possible candidate for a position that opened up on the program when Charles Gibson left in June 2006 to become permanent anchor of World News Tonight. According to published reports, Ritter took himself out of the candidate pool.
Ritter attended San Diego State University and majored in economics and accounting. He has won 7 Emmy Awards for Investigative Reporting and Journalism.
Between the years of 1999 and 2003, Ritter was often co-paired with 5PM anchor, Roz Abrams, one year his senior, who would fill in for his co-anchor Diana Williams.
In the summer of 2007, Ritter has presented the 11 p.m. newscast with several substitute anchors. Ritter's former partner Diana Williams, Sade Baderinwa, and Lauren Glassberg are a few anchors that have filled in for the vacationing Liz Cho, who gave birth to her first child on May 17, 2007. Cho returned as co-anchor the day after Labor Day, 2007 [1]
