[edit] Plot
The Princess' Joanna and Elizabeth, have been kidnapped by Death and the San Dimas duo must travel through time to find and rescue them.
Unedited From the Game Design Document... Death Replaced the Wizard in the game.. But the adventure remains the same!
"And Thus by completing their Most Excellent Video Game, Bill & Ted brought the planets into alignment and created world peace throughout time..."
After month of applying themselves, our heroes, Bill S. Preston, Esquire & Ted Theodore Logan finally completed their first musical score as The Wyld Stallions and will have the first opportunity to play it as soon as they reached Elizabeth's & Joanna's apartment. Upon their arrival, they found the place ransacked and the princesses missing. Before they could realize what is happening, two telephone booths fell through the ceiling of the apartment, each just missing Bill & Ted. The doors to one of the booths opens and Rufus steps out.
Rufus I hate to interrupt your party, but I've got some really bad news. Elizabeth & Joannah (the princesses) were captured and taken back to medieval times by an evil wizard contracted by those two royal ugly dudes that wanted to marry them. This is why I'm here. I brought a telephone booth for you two guys to use because you have a chance to defeat this dude and rescue your babes. Now, to my knowledge the only thing that can conquer the wizard is Wyld Stallions music. Because not only does it sound good, it can really mess him up.
Ted cuts Rufus off before he can say another word.
Ted
Bogus.
Bill
Lets go back in time and get'em.
Armed with their guitars and the Wyld Stallions Music score, Bill & Ted dash into the spare phone booth with fury in their eyes and a look of determination.
Bill sets down his sheet music and starts to search through the phone directory.
Rufus Wait... Hold on a second, there's more...
Ted Don't worry Rufus, we know what were doing.
Bill Here it is Ted, Medieval times. This must be the right one, it's got the big smiley next to it.
Ted closes the door and the booth becomes electrified and vanishes into the floor.
Rufus (as the door closes and booth falls into the ground) ...I have to tell you about the wizard... He knows how to use the circuits of time and you should watch out. Oh well, I never said they're perfect. Let's see if they can get out of this mess.
Cut to Phone Booth in Circuits of time We see a telephone booth shooting through the tube-like circuits of time like a roller coaster for a couple of seconds. Then, all noise of the both is overpowered by a deep and hideous laugh.
Close up of Bill & Ted
Bill Ted, I don't find anything amusing about this.
Ted Neither do I, so.. why are you laughing?
Bill I'm not, I though you were?
The camera zooms out We see a wider shot of the booth. At that point, a bolt of lightening strikes the phone booth causing it to smash into one of the walls and start spinning out of control. The force of the impact shattered one of the glass panels in the phone booth and allowed the Circuits of Time directory and Bill & Ted's musical score to be sucked out and scattered through time.
Bill & Ted are holding on for their life as the phone booth falls through an unknown time portal.
Bill & Ted (simultaneously) BOOOGUUUUS!
[edit] Game Play
The game is set with an overhead view of all the action. Unlike other Bill & Ted games, players get the choice to play as either Bill or Ted.
The main aim of the game is to collect all the musical notes that are scattered around each particular time. The game starts with the player having access to only one timeframe - old Egypt. Bill and Ted can travel to the next timeframe by collecting 16 musical notes, or a phonebook page.
There are different structures in the game that can be entered to collect notes, keys, or other important items that are needed. If the player is touched by an enemy, the character is respawned at the entrypoint of the last building or back at the phonebooth.
One interesting gameplay feature is being able to use different items and instruments to ward off enemies. The player starts with the guitar, and if they collect and switch to a different instrument, the game's music changes to reflect the instrument that is being played.
Another interesting part of the game is the interplay between eras - for instance, when in old Egypt, the player is warned that one of the items they see (the staff) has a false version and a real version. After the player travels to ancient Egypt and finds the staff, then gives it to its owner in old Egypt, they cannot travel to the next destination until they plant the warning. This avoids a time paradox.
Players can save their progress by a unique 16-character password, which represents every part of the game's state. This system worked very well and saved on the costs of putting non-volatile memory into the Lynx game card. It was also possible to play a cooperative multiplayer game, with one player as Bill and the other as Ted, by use of a ComLynx cable.
