Talk:Big Ten Conference/Comments

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There is a discrepancy between the college name listings, and history, in relations to The Pennsylvania State University and The Ohio State University.

Ohio State opened for classes in 1873 with 25 students and seven faculty members. A vigorously debated decision to broaden the curriculum beyond agriculture and engineering led to changing the name to The Ohio State University in 1878.

In 1855, The Farmers High School was established in State College, Pennsylvania(University Park, PA). Shortly, this higher education facility became The Pennsylvania State College in 1874. Later, Penn State became The Pennsylvania State University in 1953.

The ownership of THE introduction was not an issue until professional football players began introducing themselves on television.

In sum, Penn State has carried the "THE" since it was established in 1855, and they are the rightful holders of the "State University" introduction within the Big Ten Conference.
