Big Pond, Nova Scotia

Big Pond (2001 pop.: 47) is a community in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia, Canada located on the south shore of Bras d'Or Lake. Big Pond is situated approximately in the center between the communities of St. Peters, Nova Scotia and Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Big Pond is a quaint community in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia that has seen the rise of Rita MacNeil, Gordie Sampson <a href>http://www.gordiesampson.com/index2.html</h ref>and more - both of whom have won many musical awards (ECMAs, Junos and Grammy's). Quiet throughout the winter, with weekends punctuated by church functions, steak darts, potluck suppers - Big Pond plays host to hundreds of visitors and tourists in the summer months.

The community is named after the larger of 2 ponds which are actually enclosed lagoons on the shore of the lake, Big Pond and Open Pond. The Mi'kmaq name for the location was "Naooktaboogooik" which roughly translates to "It stands alone".

Renowned singer-songwriter Rita MacNeil was raised in Big Pond and maintains a tea room and giftshop in the community's former one-room school house.
