Big Brother 2008 is the ninth series of the British reality television series Big Brother scheduled to air on Channel 4 and E4. The series was launched on 5 June 2008, and it is due to run for 13 weeks until 5 September 2008.[1] This series started later than normal so that it did not clash with Britain's Got Talent, which was being aired on ITV during May.[2] Auditions were held from 21 November 2007 to 25 January 2008. Today, 15 June, is Day 11.

Broadcasts

The highlights shows have moved back from the usual 9pm timeslot to 10pm for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. This is the first time in two years in which any highlights show of Big Brother has been shown a 10pm. We will also see the return of the Saturday highlights shows, which were abandoned for Big Brother 8. Thursday's, Saturday's and Sundy's highlight shows are shown at 9pm. There are also weekly eviction shows hosted by Davina McCall[3] where housemates are eliminated from the show by the public vote. These eviction shows are usually on a friday night starting at 8:30 pm till 9:30pm, following that there is a half an hour break before it returns at 10pm for the interview of the evictee. This lasts until 10:30.

Live streaming on E4 of events in the house, known as Big Brother: Direct From The House, will be reduced because of the decision that E4 Music will continue during the series' run rather than taking a break until the series is over. For the first time in the show's history, there will be no live web stream.[4]

The series is accompanied with the shows Big Brother's Big Mouth, Big Brother's Little Brother and Diary Room Uncut.[5] Zezi Ifore and George Lamb have replaced Dermot O' Leary as the host of Big Brother's Little Brother[6] whilst Big Brother's Big Mouth is hosted by a different guest host each week, beginning with Chris Moyles, Jack Whitehall and Steve Pemberton.[7]

The weekly podcast made by the housemates in BB8 has been axed for BB9, with a 30 minute radio show Big Brother's Big Ears as its replacement. Like the podcast, it will be available for download on the Channel 4 website and is to be hosted by Iain Lee and Gemma Cairney. It will air twice a week.

Logo

The official "eye" logo was revealed on 12 May 2008, on the official Big Brother website. On 15 May the eye started its televised comeback with clips interspersed throughout the breaks, being first broadcast during the break of Come Dine With Me. 10 days before the Thursday a countdown began that featured the number of days left to wait in the new eye style. These adverts aired everyday until June 5th. Each Big Brother show shares the same logo but with a different coloured shard to reflect the show, for example Big Brother's Big Mouth is green.

House

The house is located in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, and has been completely rebuilt with a new look for the series; the house is bigger than any other series since Big Brother began in 2000. Many of the walls are padded and are slanted, facing inwards. The door to enter the house is on a wall covered in a picture of a glass eye shattered, in keeping with the logo. For the first time ever, there are two staircases by way of which the housemates will enter and leave. Usually these stairs are only seen by the housemates when they enter the house and when they are evicted, but this year they will be seen by the housemate every day, as they are separated by the Diary Room.

Garden

The garden has green and red walls with slanted mirrors and a boat-shaped pool. It also sees the return of a smoking area, to conform with UK wide legislation banning smoking in all enclosed public places and workplaces. This is in the shape of an oversized ashtray.

It also includes a small sectioned-off, indoor seating area, big enough for two. Another new feature is the prison, a tiny caged off corner of the garden, where housemates are locked in if they disobey the rules. It is comparatively larger to last year's garden.

Bedrooms

The are two bedrooms. One bedroom contains eight single beds, made of metal. Its walls are made completely of what appear to be lockers, similar to those seen in a gym. It is the first bedroom in the last five years to not have a large glass wall looking into the house, instead it only has a small window.

The other bedroom, accessed via the garden, has a feel of luxury. It contains eight double beds and has walls covered with red velvet curtains. The beds, lockers and mirrors are all framed with gold.

Bathroom

The bathroom has a look of glamour and luxury to it, with marble fitting and golden statues and taps. Unlike last year, it contains a bath, a small sitting area and for the first time ever has a glass wall, looking through the rest of the house.

Diary Room

The Diary Room separates the two staircases through which the housemates enter and leave. The door is, like the entrance door, covered in a picture of a shattered eye. The walls of the Diary Room are red and bumpy. The chair is silver-coloured and leather.

Housemates

On Day 1, the original sixteen housemates entered the Big Brother House.[8]

Weekly summary

Week 1 Tasks
  • On Day 1 the first four housemates to enter the house, Lisa, Mario, Stephanie and Luke, were given a secret mission by Big Brother. The group must keep secret the fact that Lisa and Mario are a real couple, and instead convince the other housemates that Mario is in a relationship with Stephanie. As they failed the task, the four faced eviction.[9]
  • On Day 6, housemates had to complete a task of endurance where they had to hold a panel above their heads.[10] Rachel and Dennis were the two housemates to hold their panels above their heads for the longest time and therefore received a picnic in the garden.[11] As the winners, they were required to perform the week's shopping task: they must guide a wand around a wire sneaking throughout the house that shocks the other housemates whenever the wand hits the wire.[12] After two hours, the housemates failed the task because they ran out of time having already incurred two fails because Alexandra and Sylvia took off their costumes.[13]
Entrances
  • Mario, Lisa, Luke, Stephanie, Rachel, Dale, Sylvia, Dennis, Michael, Alexandra, Rex, Mohamed, Rebecca, Darnell, Jennifer and Kathreya entered the House on Day 1.[8]
Exits
  • With 48% of the public vote, Stephanie became the first person evicted on Day 9.[14]

Controversy

Within the first week of the series, media watchdog Ofcom and Channel 4 had collectively received over 300 complaints about alleged bullying from housemate Alexandra, after an argument broke out between her and the other housemates regarding oven chips.[15] Channel 4 defended its housemate selection, claiming that the production team were closely watching the housemates as they normally do to ensure the safety of the housemates.[16] The broadcaster also noted that Alexandra had been warned that her behaviour could be deemed threatening and that it was keen on preventing another situation similar to that of Celebrity Big Brother 2007 in which over 45,000 complaints were sent to Ofcom and Channel 4 about possibly racist bullying against celebrity housemate Shilpa Shetty.[16]

Note 1: There were no nominations the first week. Instead, the result of the secret mission given to Mario, Lisa, Stephanie and Luke determined whether they or the remaining 12 housemates would face the public vote. As they failed the task, they all faced eviction.[9]

Ratings

All ratings are taken from BARB, a consortium that announces viewing figures that are considered "official," that is, take into account not only overnight figures but also recordings. BARB figures are usually released about a week after each episode; however, percentages are from overnight sources. Week 1 includes the launch week, which consists only of a Thursday and Friday show.
