Coordinates: Bhawanipatna, the headquarter of Kalahandi District, is a town of numerous temples dedicated to different deities of Hindu pantheon. Named after its presiding deity ‘Bhawani-Shankar’, it is the most convenient base for touring various places of interest in the district and the nearby district of Nawapara.
Maa Manikeswari is the main source of inspiration . Bhawanipatna is world famous for its unique and enchanting "Chattar Jatra" of goddess manikeswari .

Bhawanipatna is located at coor d|19.9|N|83.17|E|.[1] It has an average elevation of 248 metres (813 feet). bhawani patna is one of the piller of the old age.

As of 2001 India census,[2] Bhawanipatna had a population of 60,745. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Bhawanipatna has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 78% and female literacy of 61%. 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
