Bhaurao Patil

Founder of Rayat Shikshan Sanstha Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil was a great social activist in Maharashtra. By giving the formula of Earn and Learn to the Bahujan people, he tried to make them well-educated. Even today thousands of students are learning in the schools and colleges run by his society.

Born in a Jain Farmer family at Kumbhoj in Kolhapur district. His father was clerk in revenue department. His father sent him at kolhapur for education. There he came in contact of Satya Shodhak Movement. He got influenced by the thoughts of Mahatma Phule, Maharshi Vitthal Ramji Shinde and especially Shahu Maharaj. He worked for freedom movement something differentely. Inspite of political interest, he worked in other beneficial aspects of public interest lik education.

While working as an employer in the kirloskar factory kolhapur, He also worked for Satyashodhak Samaj. In a concil of Satyashodhak Samaj,held at Karle near Karad, a resolution was passed that in order to run satyaShodhak Movement successfully, it is necessary that they must educate the Bahujan Samaj. So they decided to start an education society. According to this resolution, Bhaurao Patil established Rayat Shikshan Sanstha at Karle on October 4, 1919 on the auspicious day of Ashok Vijaya Dashami. This society was specially meant for the childre of masses, so it was named Rayat ie. masses.

Government of India gave him Padma Bhushan in 1959. The university gave him D.Litt in the same year.
