BeyondAShadow was born John Matthew Ko on November 29, 1986 to Antonio and Josie Ko. He goes by Matt due to a choice made by his mother at an early age.

Matt was born in San Jose, California where he lived in Evergreen for the first 14 years of his life. In 2001, his family moved to Eagle Ridge in Gilroy where his family currently lives. His best friend is Jeff Wang because he's really awesome and cooler than anyone that Matt knows :)
