Talk:Betancourt

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hello, my name is Himar Cabrera. I am a canarian history teacher. I do not know the person that wrote this complete nonsense about the existence of so many people in America (specially Cuba) called Betancourt, Betancor, Bethencourt, etc. Obviously this person has never been in the Canary Islands nor knows much about history of the Canary Islands. I will try to write an article as soon as posible about this matter. In the mean time, please, if you are really interested in finding why is this surname so popular in some latinamerican countries get in contact with any history professor at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria or University of La Laguna in the Canary Islands. Or maybe just take the phonenumber guide of the Canary Islands and call any of the thousands of Betancourt, Betancor, Betencur, Bethencourt that you will find in it.

Althought I will extend myself a little bit more in the next few weeks, just tell you that this surname comes from Jean de Bethencourt, conqueror of the Canary Islands in the fifteenth century. It is a very popular surname in the Canary Island and all the Betancourt, Betancur, Betancor, etc in America have a canarian backround due to the intense migrations from the Canary Islands to America (specialy Cuba and Venezuela at the end of the nineteenth century and the begining of the twentieth century) since America was discover. Just remember the first latinamerican saint San Pedro de Betancourt (1626-1667) was born in the Canary Islands. I am not really sure at the moment, but I think, actually, that this Raphael Betancourt from France, if he really existed, has also a canarian backround.

Un saludo,

Himar Cabrera.
