[edit] Summary

Vista overlooking the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts from the New York State border at sunset.

The Berkshires were formed over 500 million years ago when the continent of Africa collided with North America, causing the landmass to buckle into mountainous terrain. Today, along with the rest of the Appalachian Mountain range, the mountains are among the oldest in the world as evinced by their gently curving form; this is the result of millions of years of erosion.
