whilst valid, it's unclear how it is relevant to the current context.

Elias was subsequently selected for the following year's Kangaroo Tour - selection for the Kangaroos is in itself a recognition of skills.

  • 1987 saw no advance on previous form, but Elias' brilliant workrate in defence, superb backing up, and perfectly judged kicking and chasing reached a new level in 1988: he became the chief force that pushed Balmain into its first Grand Final since 1969.

I'd question that. Because he was injured in 1989 (as the writer previously alluded to), Kerrod Walters has taken over as the main Test rake. In fact, Walters was the first-choice hooker on the 1990 Roo Tour, only dropped after defeat to Great Britain.
