[edit] U.S. Senate Race of 1804

The article states "In 1804, he was defeated in a bid for the United States Senate by Samuel Ashe."

North Carolina chose a Class II Senator in 1804. Montfort Stokes was elected but declined to serve. The legislature then elected James Turner in late 1805 to the seat. Benjamin Smith may have been the Federalist nominee in one of these races, or not. We need a source for the information posted here. My information comes from North Carolina Government, printed in 1979. I posted the information at http://www.ourcampaigns.com/ContainerHistory.html?ContainerID=156 .
