If you did a little research, you could have found references such as this:
Oldest man dies at 111 after life of wine and tears By Simon Davis in Los Angeles Last Updated: 2:12pm BST 19/06/2001
AN American farmer believed to be the world's oldest man has died aged 111.
Benjamin Harrison Holcomb, registered as the worlds oldest man, has died aged 111
Benjamin Harrison Holcomb was born on July 3, 1889, in Kansas and put his longevity down to his ability to "weep freely", which he said stopped him ever getting stressed, and regular glasses of "good wine".
He was also an avid supporter of outdoor activity, particularly field sports which he had enjoyed since he was a young boy. In 1998, aged 109, he become the oldest known man to stalk and shoot a deer.
Neil Hayes, a spokesman for Guinness World Records, said that Mr Holcomb was registered with them as the world's oldest man.
He lived most of his life in Oklahoma where he farmed every day until his retirement in 1996 aged 107. He spent the last years of his life in a nursing home being cared for by three of his five children, all in their eighties.

The oldest person on record is a Frenchwoman, Jeanne Louise Calment, who lived to 122 and died in 1997.
Also, I disagree with your 'collection of news reports'. There is a big difference between a 'local shooting' news story and a story that garners international attention. Given that Mr. Holcomb was from Oklahoma but his death was covered in England, that alone is enough to show international notability.Ryoung122 15:11, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
Note: it seems that Mr. Holcomb also entered the popular culture:
