[edit] Gompertz or Gomperts

There is uncertainty about the spelling of the name. Other sources indicate Gomperts. We may also note that Louis Gomperts, 19th century vegetarian and founder of the forerunner of the RSPCA, seemed to have used the "s" variant. Whatever the case may be, it should be noted that all the variant spellings Gompertz/Gomperts/Gomper/Gompers/etc, are all descendants of Mordechai Gumpel a Rabbi at Emmerich in the second half of the 16th century, whose sons earned the nickname Gumperts. See "Die Familie Gomperz" by Prof. Dr. David Kauffman und Dr Max Freudenthal, Frankfurt am Main, 1907. Examination of the family trees extent on the internet show that the branch using the Gomperts spelling were based largely in the Netherlands while the "Gomperz" branch settled for the most part in Prussia and Vienna. Samuel Gompers is known to have had Dutch forebears. The assimilated British branch use the "s" spelling but their relationship to Benjamin Gompert(s)(z) is unknown to me Everybody got to be somewhere! (talk) 22:34, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
