In august 1968, there was limitation in the use of indirect fire due to the presence of populated villages along Hwy 239 in the Ben Cui. This was a factor on August 18 and again on Aug 21 as fire originated from these villages. At the beginning of August, rules of engagement required Army and RVN provincial approval before the indirect fire could be used against the village areas. The delay in receiving approval was a factor in these battles. By September the rules were relaxed to allow indirect fire in response to any fire from populated areas. There were rumors at the time, that French plantation owners were demanding compensation for rubber trees damaged during Aug / Sept. In September, the plantation house adjacent to the airstrip was destroyed by bombs as it was suspected to be the command post for attacks against the 5th's night position.
