Tokyo, February 22, 1964: Clarinetist Benny Goodman, known as "The King of Swing," strikes a pensive pose during a press conference at Tokyo's Okura Hotel. Asked about the Beatles, who had just arrived on the international music scene in dramatic fashion, Goodman noted that "the youngsters of every generation need their idol, and the Beatles came along at the right time under the right circumstances." Goodman, an idol of his own generation who was embarking on a tour of Japan, declined to comment on the Liverpool group's music. But he did offer that "I think they're cute."
