The Bengal Regiment is a term ascribed a large number of regiments first raised for the British Indian Army. Composing mainly of recruits from the British Indian province of Bengal, such regiments have been carried over into the Indian Army, the Pakistan Army and the Bangladesh Army.
Most regiments in the Bengal Army were dismantled by the British after the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The mutiny was started by Mangal Pandey on March 29, 1857 at Barrackpore by injuring Lt. Baugh with a sword after shooting at him, but instead hitting his horse. Mangal Pandey belonged to the 34th BNI (Bengal Native Infantry).
