Benderli Paşa

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Benderli Paşa (Benderli Pasha) was the name of two Grand Viziers of the Ottoman Empire who were in office between 1821 and 1828. The name Benderli indicates their place of origin: the town of Bender (now in Moldova).

[edit] Benderli Ali Paşa

Benderli Ali Pasha was the last Grand Vizier, who was executed upon a clear order by the sultan (Mahmud II) after only a few days in power (21 April 1821 to 30 April 1821) due to the Greek War of Independence. He was interred at Karacaahmet Cemetery in the Üsküdar district of Istanbul.

[edit] Benderli Mehmed Selim Sırrı Paşa

Benderli Selim Sirri Pasha (b. 1771 Bender, Moldova, d. 1831 Istanbul, Turkey) ruled from 15 September 1824 until 26 October 1828 as Grand Vizier of sultan Mahmud II and failed in the fight against the Greek revolt, too: the disaster of the Turkish-Egyptian fleet in the Battle of Navarino (1827) happened during his period in office. Unlike Ali Pasha, he was not killed. In 1828-30 he became Wali (governor) of Rumelia (Turkish Balkan provinces) and 1830-31 Wali of Damascus (Syria).
