I have merged Belfry (architecture) into this article. Coffee 20:11, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

  • I suggest the statement " In the Middle Ages, cities sometimes kept their important documents in belfries" needs a citation from it's source. --Jrshaw 20:19, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
This is a Dutch language old historical text, describing how the "oorkondes" (official bulls?) are kept in the belfry (belfort in Dutch) in Ghent. The website of the city of Bruges [1] (also in Dutch) states that the archive was located in the belfry until a fire in 1741. This tourist info sites also relates the archive function of the belfry of Ghent. This site contains more general info on the use of the Belgian belfries as archives. I cannot find immediately a serious historical peer reviewed article in English which gives this info, but if you feel that one of these links is adequate, feel free to add it!
