Beitar Tel Aviv Football Club (Hebrew: מועדון כדורגל בית"ר תל אביב) was an Israeli football club based at Bloomfield, Jaffa. In 2000 it merged with Shimshon Tel Aviv to create Beitar/Shimshon Tel Aviv.

[edit] History

The club were founded as a youth team, but soon began to compete in adult leagues. Their first real success came in 1940, when they won the Cup final, beating Maccabi Tel Aviv 3-1 in the final. Two years later, they won the cup again, recording the highest ever score in the final, when they beat Maccabi Haifa 12-1.

The club appeared again in the 1947 final, but the match was abanonded when the score was 3-2 to Maccabi Tel Aviv, and was eventually awarded as a 3-0 win to Maccabi.

Beitar Tel Aviv were founder members of the Israeli league in 1949, finishing 6th out of 13 in the 1949/50 season. Despite finishing second from bottom in 1953/4, the club avoided relegation as Liga Leumit (then the top division) was expanded to 14 teams. The following season they finished 5th, with Nisim Elmaliah the division's top scorer with 30 goals. Despite only finishing 7th out of 12 in 1955/56, Beitar had both the division's top scorers; Avraham Levi and Michael Michaelov with 16 goals each.

In 1960/1, the club finished bottom of the division, and were relegated to Liga Alef. They remained in the second tier until 1964, when they were promoted as champions. After finishing one place above relegation in 1964/5, Beitar were demoted again after finishing bottom a year later. However, they bounced back in 1969 as Liga Alef champions.

The club reached the State Cup final for the fourth time in 1977, but were beaten 1-0 by old adversaries Maccabi Tel Aviv.

After several years in mid-table, the early 1980s saw the club develop a yo-yo pattern. Relegated in 1980, the club were promoted in 1981, before being relegated immediately, but then bouncing back up in 1983. Two years later the club were relegated again, before bouncing back immediately yet again.

The 1988/9 season was the club's best yet in the top flight, finishing 4th, and was bettered two years later, when a third-place finish was achieved.

1992/3 witnessed another relegation and another immediate return in 1993/4. The relegation in 1995/6 was their final one, and the club eventually merged with fellow Tel Aviv side Shimshon Tel Aviv.

Shimshon Tel Aviv F.C. (Hebrew: מועדון כדורגל שמשון תל אביב‎, Moadon Kaduregel Shimshon Tel Aviv) was an Israeli football club based at the Bloomfield Stadium in Jaffa. In 2000 it merged with Beitar Tel Aviv to create Beitar/Shimshon Tel Aviv.

[edit] History

The club was formed in memory of Shimshon Douri, a former Maccabi Tel Aviv player who died in the War of Independence. It was commonly referred to as the club of Kerem haTeimanim (Hebrew: כרם התימנים‎, Yemenites' Vineyard), a neighbourhood of Tel Aviv.

The club spent its first few years in the lower leagues, before winning promotion to the top flight (then called Liga Leumit) in 1960 as Liga Alef champions.

In 1962/3 the Shimshon finished 4th, the club's highest position to date. In 1965/6, Shimshon player Moshe Romano was the division's joint top scorer alongside Maccabi Netanya's prolific striker Mordechai Spiegler, with 17 goals. The club also made their first appearance in a State Cup final, going down 2-1 to Hapoel Haifa.

Another 4th place finish was achieved in 1969/70, with Romano again finishing as the league's top scorer. The following season they went one better by finishing second to champions Maccabi Netanya. However, the success was not sustained, and a season after finishing second, the club narrowly avoided relegation, finishing one place above the drop zone. The next season (1972/3) was even worse, as the club was relegated alongside Hapoel Marmorek.

Despite their setback the previous season, Shimshon had a successful 1973/4, finishing high enough in Liga Alef to take part in the new promotion/relegation play-offs. They finished second in the play-off group, and were promoted back to Liga Leumit.

The early 1980s were a period of relative success, as the club finished third in 1979/80 and 1984/5, and another second place finish achieved in 1982/3. A second cup final was reached in 1986, but they lost 2-1 to Beitar Jerusalem. In 1987/8 the club qualified for the Intertoto Cup (Israel had joined UEFA as a provisional member, but Israeli clubs could not compete in the full cups).

Although they reached another cup final in 1989/90, losing again, 1-0 after extra time to Hapoel Kfar Saba, the club finished bottom of Liga Leumit for the first time in their history, and were relegated to Liga Artzit (the second tier since the 1970s). Unable to bounce back to the top flight, and overshadowed by more popular and successful teams in Tel Aviv (Hapoel, Maccabi and Bnei Yehuda, the club merged with fellow Tel Aviv strugglers Beitar to form Beitar/Shimshon Tel Aviv.
