Hi I was raised in bed stuy I lived at 81 pulaski a large corner 5 story building for nearly 20 years.Dekalb ave cornered throop ave which corners flushing ave and back west to bedford ave cornering Dekalb ave like a big square's the heart of Bed Stuy which I will explain soon. I went to kindergarten at ps 54 one block west of my house, in 1955,tranfered to St Ambrose Catholics school just around the corner on Dekalb ave were I spent 9 years, then graduated to Boys High were I played baseball (my Love). We had on our block about 300 people and within half a block 20 close friends we were all like family. We lived in the beginnings of the Spanish gangs, there were the Dekalb Chaplin's (so called my protectors)going east to throop ave were the buccanners, around toward flushing ave were the Ellery bopps, and Bedford towards and around Nostrand ave were the Bishop lords. These gangs started around 1954 but not sure, but definitely the heart of Bed Stuy.In Bed Stuy it got so bad that the police made my block 81 Pulaski St a P.A.L. which meant the whole street was close to all traffic from June to end of August. It was attempt to break up the gangs who were constently at war with one another, always on the second or third pages of the New York daily news's P.A.L FOR THE REST OF US WERE IN RETROSPECT A GOD SEND.Gregory Hines was a friend of mine we played handball and he was my second basemen over at Tompkins park.Rusty Torres was one of my best friend played right field for the New York Yankees. The leader of the back Dekalb Chaplin's was a fellow by the name of Herman Bell'. BEll's mother which we use to call Mrs Bell all the time was seeing the superintendent of our apartment building. latter Herman Bell became president of the Chaplin's the went on to become a member of the black liberation army were they killed two NYPD cops in 1971.Well there is so much more to tell see ya next time.( BLACK GANGS)
