[edit] Plot
India Opal Bulloni (AnnaSophia Robb) is a lonely 10-year-old who has just moved to the small town of Naomi, Florida with her father (Jeff Daniels). The move has resulted in her losing all her friends, and she now has to make new ones.
While in the Winn-Dixie supermarket, she encounters a scruffy dog that is wreaking havoc. She claims that it is hers, and names it Winn-Dixie. She discovers that Winn-Dixie becomes friends with everyone he encounters, and she makes some new friends in the process. She also rekindles the relationship with her father, and learns about her mother who abandoned them seven years ago.
In a result to know more about her mother, Opal asks her father to list ten things about her. She says she got the idea because "Winn-Dixie thinks because I'm (Opal) ten years old I should know ten things about my mother". Her father tells her only nine things and Opal says, "What about the tenth thing? When will I learn that?" Her father replies, "Not tonight."
When Opal meets Miss Franny, a kind old librarian (Eva Marie Saint), Miss Franny tells her many great stories, one being about the old confectionery factory that used to produce the Littmus Lozenge's in Naomi. Opal then takes these lozenges to all her new friends that she has met, the Dewberry boys (Stevie and Dunlap), Otis, Sweetie Pie Thomas, and her daddy the preacher. Although they all eat the same lozenge, they all taste something very very different. Opal's daddy comments on his lozenge tasting very melancholy.
Soon Opal and her new friend Gloria Dump (Cicely Tyson) hold a party, except Winn-Dixie runs away because of the storm. Opal puts Winn-Dixie's collar on a leaf to remember him. Then, all of the partiers are inside and Winn-Dixie comes running in. All of them soon start singing "Hallelujah".
