I have the impression it's closer to "mammal" than "animal", and doesn't usually apply to e.g. birds or fish...
at least the fools finally fixed the link for the beast from the show angel

I have heard fishermen call their catch a "giant beast" though I would agree that a bird may not be a beast. It seems to be a word that can be associated with any living thing, and inanimite objects brought to life by the human imagination, such as boats cars or plains.

[edit] Slang Term
The word "beast" is often used to describe someone who is extremely skilled at something. For example, you could say, "Gustauv is a beast at soccer." It can also be used as a verb, similar to "bested". "I beasted John in baseball."
[edit] Battlestar Pegasus
"The Beast" is an established nickname for the Pegasus used in the re-imagined version of Battlestar Galactica. Modified the article to that effect. 86.134.103.196 (talk) 22:42, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
