Baynard Castle

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baynard Castle was a motte castle built in the 12th century in the village of Cottingham which is some 7 km south of Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire. (grid reference TA041330). It was sometimes referred to as the 'Castle at Cottingham' or Stuteville's castle.

A motte castle was held by William de Stuteville and around 1200 King John granted a licence to fortify the site. In the 14th century a further licence was granted to fortify a manor house on the site.

Today only the mound survives, surrounded by a substantial moat on four sides. This can be seen from the corner of West End Road and Northgate, opposite the entrance to The Lawns. A four bay timber framed house of circa. 15th Century (known as the Old Manor House) still stands on the site, accessed from Hallgate, is privately owned.

Cottingham Castle was the local name for an 19th century manor house which burnt down in 1870s and lends its name to Castle Hill Hospital.
