Family name

• Bayat (name), originally referring to a Turkish clan from Iran, now a common surname in central and southern Asia and the Middle East

Places

• Bayat, Afyonkarahisar, a district in Turkey's Afyonkarahisar Province founded by members of the clan
• Bayat, Çorum, a district in Turkey's Çorum Province founded by members of the clan
• Bayat, name of various towns in Aghjabadi, Neftchala, Shamakhi and Ujar rayonlar, Azerbaijan^[1]

In Islam

• Bayat, an Islamic word for allegiance
  • The word means "taking hand", a practice sanctioned by Surah 48:10: "Verily, those who give thee their allegiance, they give it but to Allah Himself".^[2]
  • The word is used for the oath of allegiance to an emir.
  • It is also used for the initiation ceremony specific to many Sufi orders.
