Battle of Poona

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Battle of Poona took place on 25 October 1802 near Pune between the rival factions of the Maratha Confederacy. The forces of the the Scindia (Shinde) and the Peshwa Bajirao II were attacked by the Holkars.

Holkar's troops were officered by European soldiers (notably Colonel Vickers) and succeeded in capturing the baggage and supplies of the Scindia faction. Cavalry charges from the Holkar side were instrumental in securing the victory. It is reported by Colonel Close, the then English resident at Poona, that the battle took place near the English residency which was "draped in a white flag" (sic) (see Elphinstone's reference below). This does not support the claim that the battle took place between Loni and Hadapsar, which is reported (see Duff's reference below). The residency existed on the site of the present day District Magistrate's bungalow near the Sangam Bridge in Pune. However, an English cantonment did exist then near Hadapsar and Close could have referred to a building in it.

After the battle, Colonel Close went to meet Holkar who met him in a tent ankle deep in mud. Holkar had a gash on the forehead, a wound he received in the battle. Close was asked by Holkar to facilitate negotiations between Holkar, Scindia and the Peshwa (Bajirao II). Holkar went ahead and occupied Poona while the Peshwa fled south eventually turning up at Bombay (now Mumbai) via Mahad and Harne Murud (not to be confused with Janjira Murud) and subsequently signing the Treaty of Vasai (see the third reference below).
