Battle of Anacostia Flats was the name given to the time when Herbert Hoover ordered federal troops to forcibly remove the World War I veteran Bonus Army who marched into Washington D.C. and demanded an early pension. This proved to be a bad political choice for Hoover, helping Franklin Roosevelt to win the presidency. General Douglas MacArthur was the man to personally carry out the order, and his troops evicted the veterans with bayonets and tear gas. In the process, one person was blinded and an eleven-month old baby purportably died of tear-gas exposure
