Bartercard has been operating in Australia as a major financial institution for over 20 years and I was surprised an article did not exist.

Having had some dealings with Bartering does anyone else think the system is fatally flawed? Any small buisness joining is paying a large upfront fee, cash fees at an effective rate of 11% on every transaction and more importantly it kills cash flow, paying out cash for labour, parts etc and only receiving barter pounds in exchange. It also appears the system suffers with hyper inflation, although it's stated you must trade at same prices you would charge in the cash world nobody does, and there this little in the way of controls to stop insiders effectively printing their own money by running trade pound overdrafts that will never be repaid, which in turn fuels inflation as the amount of trade pounds in issue keeping rising.
