Barry R. Schaller

The Honorable Barry R. Schaller is an Associate Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court. He served as a judge of the Connecticut Appellate Court from 1992 to 2007. Before that, he was a trial court judge in Connecticut for 18 years. A graduate of Yale College and the Yale Law School, he is a visiting lecturer in public policy at Trinity College where he teaches Bioethics, Public Health Law and Ethics, health policy, and Public Policy and Law. He is an instructor in trial advocacy at the Yale Law School and has had recent appointments as visiting lecturer at Wesleyan University, where he teaches Bioethics and Public Health law, ethics and policy, and at the UConn School of Public Health.

As a bioethicist with respect to health and ethics policy, he serves on the Middlesex Hospital Bioethics committee and the St. Francis Hospital IRB. He is also a participant in the Yale University Interdisciplinary Center on Bioethics [1]. Justice Schaller has lectured and written extensively in the field of ethics and judicial ethics, law, jurisprudence, bioethics, literature, conflict resolution, and public policy. His first book, A Vision of American Law, was widely reviewed and received the Quinnipiac Law School award for excellence. He is the author of numerous articles, including A Legal Prescription for Bioethical Ills, published in the Quinnipiac School of Law journal. His new book, Understanding Bioethics and Law: The Promises and Perils of the Brave New World of Biotechnology will be published in November, 2007.
