[edit] History
The constituency was created for the 1945 general election and abolished for the February 1974 general election.
[edit] Boundaries
The constituency was created, as a sixth county division of Hertfordshire, in 1945. Previously the area had been part of the St Albans seat. This was one of the English constituencies divided as an emergency measure, before the general review of parliamentary constituencies due later in the decade, because its electorate exceeded 100,000 voters.
The local government areas included in Barnet from 1945 were Barnet Urban District, East Barnet Urban District and Elstree Rural District. Between 1950 and 1955 the Hatfield Rural District was added to the constituency. The rural district had been part of the St Albans parliamentary seat before 1950. It was transferred to the Hertford constituency from 1955.
In 1965 the Barnet and East Barnet urban districts were added to some other territory, from the county of Middlesex, to form the London Borough of Barnet which was part of Greater London. Elstree Rural District remained part of the administrative county of Hertfordshire.
When the parliamentary boundaries were next altered, with effect from the United Kingdom general election, February 1974, the Greater London parts of the old constituency moved to the new seat of Chipping Barnet. The Elstree Rural District was transferred to South Hertfordshire.
