Barlow Lyde & Gilbert LLP, or BLG, is a leading international legal practice specialising in commercial litigation and dispute resolution, as well as insurance and reinsurance. It has offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore with its principal office in London. On 1 May 2007, the practice of Barlow Lyde & Gilbert in London and Singapore transferred to Barlow Lyde & Gilbert LLP, a limited liability partnership. Following local regulatory clearance the practice of Barlow Lyde & Gilbert in Shanghai will also be transferred to Barlow Lyde & Gilbert LLP. A separate but affiliated partnership known as Barlow Lyde & Gilbert, operates in Hong Kong.

BLG is a leading international legal practice with more than 300 lawyers and 80 partners. Its principal office is in the UK in the City of London. Overseas it has a significant presence in Asia with offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore. BLG is well known for its expertise in commercial litigation and dispute resolution and also in all aspects of insurance law. It also has expertise in aerospace, shipping, information technology and employment with clients including government and public bodies, private and public companies and partnerships.

On 17 July 2007 Clint Evans was appointed Chief Executive Officer to replace managing partner Kennan Michel.^[1] Evans is an ocean rower and winner of the 2005 Atlantic Rowing Race with his partner Chris Andrews, the first British crew to win the Atlantic Rowing Race. He says that his gruelling 51 days, two hours and 10 minutes voyage has many key parallels that can be translated into how he will work within his new firm. He believes that "Every part of a business needs to be talking to each other to ensure that everyone is moving in the same direction - The final challenge, both out at sea and in business, is reacting to change."^[2]^[3]

BLG introduced a new management level of associate director in a review of career paths at the firm. BLG made up 36 associates to associate director in the first round, establishing the new role as sitting between associate and partner. The role was created in 2007 as part of BLG's restructuring. The Senior Partner, Richard Dedman, said “This is a new firm role aimed at empowering and rewarding our more experienced associates. The new associate directors will be making a vital contribution to departmental management and developing client relationships.”^[4]^[5]

In 2005/6, BLG won three industry awards for its litigation expertise, winning The Lawyer and Legal Week 'Litigation Team of the Year' awards as well as the Legal Business 'Dispute Resolution Team of the Year' award for its work on behalf of Ernst & Young in the Equitable Life litigation.
