BarbieGirls.com came out on April 24, 2007 and was created by the advertising agency Studiocom for the toy company Mattel. It is a controlled community, designed to provide a safe environment for girls around the world to interact. With 200,000 registered users after one week and 5 million after 4 months, it is considered the fastest growing virtual community in history, even outpacing Second Life.
BarbieGirls.com sells an MP3 player which unlocks the items available to avatars on the site.
