Barba non facit philosophum.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
“Barba non facit philosophum.” is a Latin phrase. It means “A beard does not constitute a philosopher.”.
[edit] Origin
According to the Latin author Aulus Gellius, once a beggar came to the Latin consul Herodes Atticus and asked him for money for bread. When Herodes Atticus asked the beggar who he was, the beggar answered that it would be obvious that he was a philosopher. Then the consul answered: “Video barbam et pallium, philosophum nondum video.” (I see just a beard and a coat, but not a philosopher).
