Banks Gwaxula

Malizole “Banks” Gwaxula of Port Elizabeth (PE) is recognized as an experienced teacher and community leader in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He has worked for most of his life uplifting PE’s township communities [1]. As a teacher for over 20 years at Emfundweni Primary School in the PE township of Zwide, Mr. Gwaxula has reached out and organized the students and the local community as a way of revitalizing the school [2].
Since then, Banks Gwaxula has been actively involved in many community organizations. He co-founded the Leaderwise Schools Project to develop the leadership skills of students from over 8 schools. More recently, he has co-founded Ubuntu Education Fund, a Zwide-based NGO that employs over 55 people in Zwide and reaches over 40,000 children and their families with life saving educational and health initiatives. Well known all over Port Elizabeth, Banks Gwaxula has now been acknowledged throughout [South Africa] and internationally. This includes his recognition on the New Brighton Library’s Hall of Fame [3]. More recently, he was recognized at the World Economic Forum and was a finalist in the Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award (2006) [4].
