As of 2001 India census,[2] Banihal had a population of 2729. Males constitute 57% of the population and females 43%. Banihal has an average literacy rate of 68%, higher than the Indian national average of 59.5%; with 66% of the males and 34% of females literate. 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
