[edit] FYROM?

Includes FYROMisation: This is when (Greek) editors, offended or surprised by the fact that Wikipedia refers to this country as the "Republic of Macedonia" instead of "FYROM" change the term -Republic of Macedonia- to -FYROM-. They use any or all of the following reasoning:

  • the UN and other international organisations call it "FYROM"
    • therefore it is the official name of the country
  • the UN and other international organisations call it "FYROM"
    • therefore it is the neutral way to refer to it
  • the country is trying to monopolise the name Macedonia
  • it offends Greeks
    • therefore Wikipedia is taking sides

Includes DeFYROMisation: This is when (Macedonian) editors, offended that Wikipedia uses FYROM to refer to their country in some contexts, change it to Republic of Macedonia or Macedonia.

[edit] African?

Argument over whether Greeks are related to sub-Saharan African populations (moreso than other European ethnic groups). Non-Greek editors trying to appropriate the relation, Greek editors trying to play down any relation. Includes a racist attitude towards Sub-Saharan Africans from both sides.

[edit] Bulgarian?

Includes many topics:

  • Whether ethnic Macedonians are/were Bulgarians or not.
    • Whether particular individuals, ranging from Tsar Samuil to Ljubčo Georgievski, are/were Macedonian or Bulgarian.
  • Whether the Macedonian language is a dialect of Bulgarian or not.

[edit] Minorities

Argument over the minorities in Greece:

  • Whether the Slavic-Speakers are ethnic Greeks who speak a completely different language to Greek, closely related to Macedonian and Bulgarian, or are ethnic Macedonians, or ethnic Bulgarians, who have been Hellenised, either by the Greek government or by themselves.
  • Whether Aromanian and Megleno-Romanian speakers are ethnic Greeks who speak completely different languages to Greek, closely related to Romanian, or are ethnic Aromanians and ethnic Megleno-Romanians (or even ethnic Romanians) who have been Hellenised, either by the Greek government or by themselves.
  • Whether Arvanitic speakers are ethnic Greeks who speak a completely different language to Greek, closely related to Albanian, or are ethnic Albanians who have been Hellenised, either by the Greek government or by themselves.

[edit] Serbo-Croatian

Whether Serbo-Croatian is one language with four standards or whether it was a failed experiment in unifying the Croatian and Serbian languages.
