[edit] Balve and Widukind

Any sources? --Weissmann 14:47, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

The information is from the website of the town itself [1]. Quote: Eines dieser Güter im Besitz des Sachsenherzogs Widukind (um 780 n. Chr.) wird "Ballowa" genannt und weist auf den späteren Namen Balve hin. That text only mentions that there were several farms at the river Hönne, but no further details. Maybe have to check at the local library for a more detailled local history. andy 11:31, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
I have visited the homepage of Balve but there is no further notice about a Langhaus from Widukind. I think this is a fake. --Weissmann 15:50, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

First, Widukind is claimed by many different regions and noble families, so that needs to be taken into account.

Secondly, I don't think it fair to characterize the tradition of Widukind settling in the area of Balve (formerly known as Ballowa or Ballofa) as "fake." It may well be merely a folk tradition.

Following his conversion, there is little record of Widukind. The Sauerland, where Balve is located, is bit of a hike from the Saxony of his time, but it is possible he settled here. The land is fertile, and it's easy to be anonymous in this area due to the many large hills/mountains that typify the region.

However, given his status at the time one would be forgiven for assuming he would have established a fairly large house. He was, afterall, a duke by this time I believe, although there is no indication he was awarded any lands as a duke in the region. User:68.144.86.149
