Ballydowse is a Christian punk Celtic rock band from Chicago, Illinois. The group was formed by two members of Crashdog, Andrew Mandell and Brian Glover, in the mid-1990s; many of the group's other members were from the Jesus People U.S.A. commune.[1][2] In addition to the group's Mekons/Pogues-style Celtic punk influences, the group also draws from world musics such as klezmer and Tibetan throat singing.[3][4] Ballydowse released two albums. Their debut, The Land, the Bread, and the People, was produced by Steve Albini. Their second album focuses on the group's political activism over the economic sanctions on Iraq in the 2000s, a concern for which their outspokenness got them removed from the set of the Oprah Winfrey Show in September of 2000.[2] The group is currently on hiatus.
